What's a Kronosaurus?

THAT'S a Kronosaurus!

Well yes, it's a modern interpretation of what this creature may have looked like.

The Kronosaurus roamed this land (ok they swam the seas) back about 110 million years ago. Weighing in at a husky 15 tonnes, they could grow up to about 13 metres long.

Where would you expect to find the Kronosaurus' little 'korner' of the world? Some tropical coastal town in the northern part of Australia? There's more than a little crocodile in that smile. But no, that's not where you find this large smiling 'saurus.

You'll find Kronosaurus Korner in the very inland town of Richmond, in northern Queensland. You see, 110 million years ago it was slap bang in the middle of a vast inland sea, where the Kronosaurus would have felt very much at home.

Memorial to selflessness - Halls Creek WA

You'll find these two chaps, immortalised in bronze, outside the shire offices in Halls Creek in Western Australia.

 'Russian Jack', as the wheelbarrow pusher was known, made himself the stuff of legend when he pushed his gravely ill mate over 300kms from Halls Creek to Wyndham.

Can you appreciate the magnitude of this feat? Just walking 300 km would be arduous enough, but then add pushing a wheelbarrow with, oh say, a 70kg man in it. This man is not just dead weight either, he is very sick and needs to be looked after, all the while you're pushing him across the desert toward medical help. Then there is food and water for both of them, so add that to the wheelbarrow's weight.

Russian Jack will be wearing his work boots as he trudges through the sandy soil toward the distant horizon. Not for him the super technical walking footwear of today or a nice flat even surface to walk on. This fellow is tramping along a rutted desert track, sandy and boggy in some places, rocky and gibber strewn in others.

The level of sheer guts and determination needed to accomplish this feat is incomprehensible these days. We wouldn't have a clue what it would have been like for these two hardy gold miners - we can only imagine. This is true heroism.

In Memorium - Broken Hill

It sits on the edge of the 'mullock heap', high above the city of Broken Hill.

The heavy steel panels of this dramatic structure gradually fold overhead, evoking the enclosure experienced underground. This is accentuated by the timber props 'bracing' the steel panels, which constrict at first and then open up, framing the view across the city. 

Within the memorial are free standing glass panels, etched with the names of those who have died mining the 'Line of Lode' since 1883. 

The memorial spiritually and symbolically represents the human tragedy of more than 800 deaths since mining began here. It's an iconic monument that reflects the memories and spirit of the city of Broken Hill.

Jolly Green Giant of the Pilbara

This big green 'tonka toy' was one of a fleet of 17 that were known as the 'Jolly Green Giants'. They were put into service in 1976 at a cost of $675,000 each and used to haul iron ore in the operation at Paraburdoo in Western Australia. 

From 1976 to when they were taken out of service in 1987, the fleet hauled an impressive 285,000,000 tonnes of the red dirt. Each of these Terex Haul Trucks could carry a hefty 154 tonnes fully loaded and rattled along at a maximum speed of 40 km/h.

Sturt's Desert Pea

The floral emblem of South Australia, Sturt's Desert Pea or Swainsona formosa is confined to Australia, where it can be found brightening up the arid regions in all of the mainland states except Victoria. It often appears after heavy rain and can withstand the extreme temperature variations experienced in inland deserts.

While exploring between Adelaide and Central Australia in 1844, Sir Charles Sturt  wrote in his journal that..."we saw that beautiful flower ... in splendid blossom on the plains. It was growing amid barrenness and decay, but its long runners were covered with flowers that gave a crimson tint to the ground".

It is protected in South Australia and collection from Crown Land without a permit is illegal. The best way to take it home is by snapping a photo.

Aiming for Rain

It's 1902 and the south western Queensland town Charleville is held firmly in the grip of the state's longest running drought. Rain is desperately needed and soon. But how to make it rain?

It's one of thoses 'desperate times calls for desperate measures' scenarios. Shooting the clouds in Europe chased away the hail and saved their crops and vineyards. Maybe those same guns would make in rain over here?

The Stiger Vortex Guns, invented by Austrian Albert Stiger in the 1880's were seen as shining examples of emerging technology in the field of explosives. These four metre high steel cannons fired a six ounce charge of gunpowder vertically into the clouds. The rising surge of gas, less dense than the surrounding air, combined with the pressure wave it created, changed the atmospheric pressure within the clouds.

This should have brought the rain, but extensive tests throughout south western Queensland failed to yield any results. Some of the guns actually exploded, giving onlookers a reason to duck. The trials were eventually abandoned and the guns, except for those two above, were broken up for scrap metal. Yes, public interest in them was waning, but the arrival of steady, soaking drought-breaking rain toward the end of 1902 sealed their fate.

Christmas in Bundaberg 2010

With rainy skies but lightened spirits we set off from Toowoomba early in the morning of the 23rd of December to meet with the fellow travellers from the Gold Coast, at Colmslie Park for morning tea.  We had been warned that we were likely to have a wet Christmas, but that is only a little different from a white one, so in a very festive mood, we charged on regardless.

Lunch in Gympie, followed by a tour of the Gympie Gold Mining Museum, and on to Bundaberg, arriving in plenty of time for a freshen up and settling into our nice rooms at the Bundaberg  Country Comfort Motel before sitting down to a scrumptious dinner in the restaurant.  Travelling makes us all tired, so like good little children the comfort of our beds soon beckoned us to rest and relax.

The Hinkler Museum and cottage in Hinkler Park was our first stop after breakfast.  The beauty of the park and the museum were only surpassed by the freshly baked Devonshire morning tea at the Café 1928 in the same complex. 

The host at 1928 advised us to make tracks for home because of the heavy rain and flooding they were expecting in Bundy over the weekend.  However, thankfully this did not eventuate as expected, and we carried on to further delights, back over the bridge and the rising flood waters of the Burnett River, to the Bundy Rum Visitors Centre, there to learn about the history of rum making in Bundy and take time for a taste test and shopping spree. 

On the way, we very aware of the rising Burnett River and the parks that were already flooded along the river banks.  Businesses were starting to pack up the sandbags and take their merchandise to safer locations to escape the flood waters.

Lunch at the RSL on the river bank was delicious and the service very courteous.  Satisfied, we journeyed back out of Bundy to Apple Tree Creek to the Flying High bird sanctuary.  The bird enclosure is extensive and a lovely place to walk through.  Guests were advised to remove their earrings and other personal items that might be of interest to a pair of small parrots who were adept at taking souvenirs.  Hearing aids were also on their hit list, but fortunately the birds were unable to take any booty from our travelling band.  Back to Bundy and dinner with a surprise visit from Santa and Merry Christmas was followed by another good night’s sleep. 

Saturday which was Christmas Day started more leisurely,  and after breakfast those who desired visited some of the local churches for Christmas Day Services.  Santa couldn’t have gone very far, because after morning tea there he was, back again with bags of goodies for each one.  Just like being children again! 

Lunch at Rowers on the River, where the menu was seafood and cheese and fruit platters, followed by a choice of 5 main course fares and 5 desserts.  Our host Steve has already commenced sandbagging along the river side doors and windows and was planning to finish this after we had all eaten.  At this stage the river was already thirty meters over the banks.  Although it had started to rain, we travelled on to the Bargara beach area and Mon Repo which is famous for the turtle egg laying and hatching, and also to the Hummock.  A beach walk along the Bargara front was a treat between the showers.

Sunday we motored on through Gin Gin to Mount Perry where we enjoyed morning tea under a large shelter just right for the occasion.  On the way we visited the  Boolboonda Rail Tunnel, and after morning tea, the museum at Mount Perry.  Lunch at the Mount Perry Hotel was cancelled because the staff were all floodbound, and were unable to come and cook for us, but we were well looked after at the Gin Gin roadhouse, and then spent the afternoon watching “Drive In” movies in the coach or else the cricket on the TV.

Monday morning came all too quickly, and after breakfast we were all packed up ready to leave Bundy for the trip home.  Morning tea was appreciated at Hervey Bay in a lovely park along the shore after a quick look at the area.  Thankfully no rain.  Lunch at the Kenilworth Hotel was nicely prepared for us and served with a minimum of delay.  The rain started in earnest after lunch and slowed our progress somewhat, but we made it to the Shell Depot at Nudgee where the Gold Coast travellers left us to go their own way home.  We were advised earlier in the day that the Warrego Highway was cut at Glenore Grove and we would have to divert through Esk, but thankfully the road was open again by the time we arrived there.

It was good to come home, and the many photos and happy times we shared will live long in our memories.  Time to save and plan for next Christmas.

Nine minus one equals twelve?

The Great Ocean Road, where those coastal giants, the Twelve Apostles, rise majestically out of the Southern Ocean.

Those stacks of limestone used to be known as the piglets of the 'Sow and Piglets', the sow being the nearby Muttonbird Island. In 1922 it was decided that the name wasn't appealing enough for the tourists, and they were renamed 'The Apostles'. So of course they were soon being referred to as 'The Twelve Apostles', but there was only ever nine of them.

Now there are only eight. The remains of the stack that collapsed on July 3, 2005 can be seen in the bottom left of the above picture.

The limestone cliffs and stacks are being eroded by the constant pounding of the Southern Ocean. In time others may fall as new stacks are made from the ever changing cliffs.

Maybe one day, in the not too distant future, there will actually be twelve apostles.

Armoured Men of Glenrowan

It's a familiar image - Ned Kelly lurching through the trees in his heavy steel armour, firing at the police. Reeling from the impact of the bullets against his armour, he fights on until brought low from repeated shots to his unprotected legs. Thus a bushranger becomes the stuff of legend, immortalised in film and song.

Hammered out from ploughshares, the armour which weighed 90 pounds, consisted of a cylindrical helmet, a breastplate with apron and a back plate laced with leather thongs

What seems to be forgotten is that the other gang members each had their own suit of armour. They were out of sight inside the Glenrowan Inn with the townspeople they were holding as hostages.

The seige saw Joe Byrne, whose 'suit of armour' was the only one lacking an apron, bleed to death from a bullet wound to the groin. Dan Kelly and Steve Hart, according to a witness, committed suicide by taking poison, rather than surrender to the police. The constabulary set fire to the inn and the bodies of the bushrangers were burnt beyond recognition.

Or were they? There is no debate over the fact that two bodies were located amongst the ashes of the Glenrowan Inn but were they those of the outlaws.  Rumours persist to this day that Dan Kelly and Steve Hart escaped, living out their lives under assumed identities.

Dangerous Flotsam and Jetsam

Imagine finding something like this washed up on your local beach. Well this one was. Mr Harry Lynch found this German Mine at Middle Head Beach, on the mid North Coast of NSW, back in 1942.

This type of mine was known as a 'Contact Mine'. They were moored just below the surface of the water, connected by a steel cable to an anchor on the seabed. This one broke it's mooring somehow and eventually washed ashore.

When some unfortunate vessel 'bumped' into one of these sinister looking things, two cwt (about 101kgs) of explosives detonated, with disasterous results.

A Flock of Seagulls

This imposing structure was built 'in memorium' to the 645 men who lost their lives when H.M.A.S. Sydney II was sunk in battle on 19th November 1941. This dome, known as the 'Dome of Souls', is one of four elements that make up the memorial to H.M.A.S. Sydney II. During the remembrance ceremony at the temporary memorial in 1998, a large flock of seagulls wheeled overhead and flew out to sea in formation during the playing of the 'Last Post'.

Another element of the permanent memorial is this bronze statue of a woman who 'waits in vain', for the cruiser and those 645 souls to come home.

A third element of the memorial is this stele, built to be exactly the same size and shape as the ship's prow. The fourth is the granite wall listing the ship's company. This memorial is to be found on top of Mount Scott, at Geraldton in Western Australia.

Sightseeing on the West Coast Tour included a stop at this memorial landmark.   

Are you looking at ME?

This handsome chap was spotted on a day trip to Australia Zoo. These iguanas are characterised by prominent bony tubercles on their snouts that resemble horns, hence their name - Rhinocerous Iguana.

Outside of captivity, they can only be found throughout Hispaniola, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. They range in size from about 60cm - 120cm and weigh from 4.5kg - 9kg. Primarily herbivores, living on leaves, flowers, fruits and berries, they have been known to eat insects, small snakes and even other lizards.

They usually avoid humans, but watch out for their sharp teeth and heavy tail, which they will use to defend themselves if cornered.

"Click go the shears boys..."

Here's another roadside 'big thing', well a fairly big thing anyway. This impressive set of blade shears can be found by the Cunningham Highway on the way through Warwick in South Eastern Queensland. It sits atop a memorial to one of Warwick's famous sons, who learned the 'art' of blade shearing in the woolsheds in the Warwick area.

This famous son - Jackie Howe - is best remembered for his unequalled blade shearing record. On 10th of October in 1892, at 'Alice Downs' near Blackall in Central Western Queensland, Jackie shore 321 sheep in eight hours. This record tally was not bested until 1950, by a shearer using machine shears.

Ghan... But Not Forgotten

Originally called the 'Great Northern Railway', the 'Old Ghan Railway' started life back in 1878 in Port Augusta, South Australia. It slowly made it's way northwards, through Marree and Oodnadatta, not arriving in Alice Springs until 1929.

Named in honour of the Afghan camel drivers who arrived over here in the late 19th century, the 'Old Ghan' followed the same track as the Overland Telegraph Line. Steam trains need water, so closely following water courses made the line notorious for washouts.

A flatcar would be coupled behind the tender and filled with sleepers and railway tools.

If the train encountered a washout, both crew and passengers were expected to form a 'rail gang' and repair the line so the train could continue.

This would have made for a fun trip back in the good ol' days.

When diesel engines replaced the 'romance' of steam, the line was rerouted to a waterless area about 160kms to the west.

The shadowy remains of the old line can still be found out there in the desert.

Who's a Big Galah?

Halfway across this wide brown land you'll find the town of Kimba in South Australia. Out the front of "Half Way Across Australia" you find this large pink and grey bird, familiar to us all. How big is this bird you ask? Well, it stands eight metres high and about two and a half metres wide. The great Big Galah weighs in at over two tonnes and was built back in 1993. That's a lot of silly pink bird.

What's you favourite 'big thing by the road'? Australia has plenty to offer in this category so you'll be spoilt for choice.

Birds of a Feather?

The Brolga

The 'reddish crane' found in large noisy flocks in the northern tropics and in eastern parts of Australia. They're not fussy about what they eat, dining on anything from wetland plant tubers to grain, various insects and even frogs and small reptiles.

They are known best for their mating dance which involves jumping, dancing, head shaking and prancing about to the accompaniment of loud trumpeting calls. This strengthens the pair bonding and they probably mate for life.

The Cassowary

This large flightless bird lives a secretive and solitary life in the dense rainforests of Northern Queensland and New Guinea. Living mainly on fallen fruit, they are known to eat anything from snails to small dead mammals.

The females are dominant and after breeding and the eggs have been laid, the male is left in charge of incubation and chick rearing. The female moves on and may even breed again with another male that season.

Insect Skyscrapers

In many parts of Australia colonies of these insect skyscrapers dominate the landscape. Termites mix together mud and their saliva to make a concrete like substance, enabling them to build mounds up to six metres in height. That's quite the insect engineering feat.

A single mound can take up to 50 years to get to this size, containing several million 'residents'.

Inside the mound there are indoor gardens, nurseries and the queen has her own special chamber. Similar to an iceberg, there's more below the surface than above. The networks of rooms and tunnels can extend up to 10 metres below ground level.

They even have their own efficient air conditioning system. The warm air rises and escapes out the surface holes and fresh air is drawn in and cooled in the underground chambers, before being directed into the main living areas.

The Humble Kerosene Tin

The humble four gallon kerosene tin. What did folks do with it once it it was emptied? Well they could have chucked it in the corner of the shed to 'rust in peace' like this one, or they could have put it to much better use.
 
Back in the 20's and 30's kerosene had many uses around the house. It 'powered' heaters, lanterns, fridges and even stoves. So there was more than just the odd 'kero' tin lying around.

With no work to be had and no steady income during the Great Depression, people lost their homes and were forced to 'make do' as best they could. Some built their own huts using saplings for the frame and flattened and folded kero tins for the walls and roof.

You'll find this 'kerosene tin hut' in the grounds of the Morven Museum in south western Queensland, and in our Outback Escape photo set.

Song Immortalised In Bronze

This fella started life as a song written by Stan Coster and sung by the late great Slim Dusty.  
Cunnamulla’s Paroo Shire Council held a nationwide competition to come up with a sketch of what folks thought the Cunnamulla Fella might look like. A double life size bronze statue was created by Archie Sinclair from the winning drawing by Mike Nicholas.

The statue’s a tribute to Stan Coster and Slim Dusty and to the ‘Ringers’ of the bush and he can be found out front of the Paroo Shire Hall, quietly gazing across the centre of town.

A Day Filled with Gingery Goodness

Down the range we go, making tracks for the sunshine - well the Sunshine Coast anyway. Today we'd escape Toowoomba's recent cold dreariness. We veer north up the Brisbane Valley Highway through Esk then onto Kilcoy where we pull up for smoko. The wind is still brisk but the sun does make a welcome appearance.

We arrive at The Ginger Factory in Yandina around the 10:30 mark. The sun is shining!! Our guide greets us at the door with a treat of delicious sugar coated ginger.

There's an hour or so for a look around before our 'official' tour begins. We enter through the Ginger Shop - brimming with all kinds of 'gingerific' goodies. Strolling further into the complex we come upon Gingertown, five interesting shops masquerading as a delightful historical village, with their olde time shop fronts. Browsing the goods on offer - from macadamias to motoring memorabilia is a fun way to spend time (and money).

More amusement awaits - we go a little 'Overboard!' on a watery adventure following the Gingerbread Man on his escape around the world. There was no running involved for us, we just climb into 'lifeboats' for this enchanting journey.

Next we enjoy 'The Taste of Ginger Tour'. It takes us from under the ground to the top of our table; educating us on the planting, harvesting, and processing of ginger - finishing off with a totally yummy taste testing. The nibbles don't deter us from our next destination, the Ginger Cafe where we enjoy lunch topped off with ice cream with ginger sauce.

Then it's 'all aboard' The Ginger Train, an authentic Queeensland Cane Train, which takes us on a leisurely trip back through a century of Queensland's ginger history. We spend some time strolling about the glorious rainforest gardens before hopping back on the coach and trundling back home via Brisbane.

They say that ginger has both medicinal and magical properties, but we hadn't realised that a trip to the Ginger Factory would leave us feeling so good!

The (old Tin) Hare and the…

Hop on board for a rattling good trip from Normanton on the Norman River eastwards to the old gold mining town of Croydon.

The Gulflander, also called the 'Red Rattler' or the old 'Tin Hare', depending on which locals you talk to, takes you on a nostalgic journey through some very remote country.

It's a leisurely 152km trip through wetlands, dry savannah and endless grasslands as you travel this unique rail line. The driver will just stop the train when he has something of interest to show you. So prepare for lots of stops and yes, there will be plenty of photo opportunities.

Let's go surfin' now

Wouldn't this be the the surfer's 'perfect wave'? One that holds it's form, never breaks and just goes on and on forever? Wave Rock has has been doing all this for about 2700 million years and at 15 metres high, it's a lot more than 'double overhead'.

The wave shape comes from softer rock being eroded away over time, undercutting the base and leaving the distinctive overhang. The striped red, brown and yellow stains are caused by rain washing chemical deposits, like iron oxide, down it's surface. This gives the rock it's hand painted look and adds to it's wave-like appearance.

This fine example of artistic nature can be found near the small town of Hyden, which is about 350km or so south west of Perth in W.A.

An Expedition to Cape York

An extract from the journals of Bev, second in command on the Stonestreet’s exploratory journey to the top of Australia.

"The expedition set out from Toowoomba on August 4 2010 with the leadership of Rob and sometime navigator Bev.

The aim of the journey - to retrace the steps of former explorers, Leichhardt and Jardine to the tip of Cape York Peninsula.

Our party of 26 consisted of photographers, botanists and geologists taking every opportunity to identify their subject.

Accompanying the party were 280 horses (in the engine of a 4X4 coach) and a supply wagon stocked with plenty of provisions...

Our early travels took us through wonderful grain and grazing pastures. We witnessed vast areas being exploited for coal...

Charters Towers - a wonderful insight of the gold rush era - and a beautifully historic town...

BBQ at Three Rivers Hotel, Stan Coster / Slim Dusty country Today we celebrated Tom’s birthday...

Driving through fog entering Atherton reminded us of Scotland with rolling hills, wind farm and foggy conditions!...

Leaving Mareeba we left the bitumen behind travelling north on the beef road. The start of many kilometres of corrugations...

Elliott Falls/ Twin Falls/ Fruit Bat Falls  were a find in off the beaten track (and through a couple of deep creek crossings)...

Local characters discovered at the Jardine River. We put the coach on the ferry to cross the river. ‘If you’re not there by 4pm be prepared to camp the night.’...

Bamaga / Punsand Bay camping in cabins right on the edge of Australia. Frangipani Beach is the next step to being right at the tip of Cape York... We climbed up over the rocks then stood on the very tip of Australia.

WE MADE IT!

In Sommerset we found evidence of  Frank Jardine’s settlement. He overlanded a herd of cattle from Rockhampton, what a wonderful spot but what possessed him!!...

A day trip to Thursday Island, what a wonderful trip seeing Possession Island and trying to imagine what it would have been like for Cpt Cook all those years ago...

Retraced steps to Weipa. In 1955, geologist Harry Evans confirmed Matthew Flinders 'reddish cliffs' were, in fact, pure bauxite. This resulted in Weipa becoming the largest bauxite mine in the world. The size of the machinery being used is amazing...

Cooktown, a pretty spot and a welcome resting place for the party. Some of our botanists were able to compare notes and pictures with those of Cpt Cook’s botanist Joseph Banks which were on display at the botanical gardens...

Drive through Lakefield National Park to Cooktown was just so pretty and different. Vast plains, Lagoons covered in red & white lilies. Many birds: brolga’s, egrets, magpie geese...

Now let’s get serious. We did all of this in 17 days in the comfort of a 4x4 coach. Can you imagine how long an expedition like this would have taken Leichhardt on horseback and by foot? We came across plenty of other travellers with many different modes of transport, many four-wheel-drives, even quad bikes, motor bikes, cars & caravans, mobile homes. The weather was wonderful which made access to places great for us and the hospitality of the ’Top End’ people is just amazing.

We were so very fortunate to see our great country and appreciate what our early explorers did to pave the way for us.

Cape York was such a popular tour, we decided to repeat it in 2011. Both of these tours are almost full so two more were added for 2012. These are starting to fill as well! Tawny Frogmouths

 
Ever been walking through the bush somewhere and felt like you were being watched? Next time you do, look up and you might spot a couple of Tawny Frogmouths, just sitting in a tree, looking right back at you.

This charming couple were snapped on a recent trip up to Cape York. The one on the right is assuming a defensive pose - 'I'll slit my eyes and keep real still and you won't see me at all'. The one on the left appears to be striking the 'take a picture of me 'cos I'm not afraid of you' pose.
They hunt their food at night, if hunting can be described as sitting still, waiting for dinner to fly within beak range. They also pair for life.

 

Tjapukai - People of the Rainforest

Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park showcasing the “People of the Rainforest’s” indigenous culture was one of the many sights that the Across the Top tour group were treated to.

They enjoyed  theatrical performances, Didgeridoo demonstrations, learning about bush food and some even tried to master the Boomerang.

It was a great way to learn about the traditional culture and customs of the Tjapukai people.

A Sizeable Seat

 

After touring around Australia, hostess Narelle took a bit of a break on a visit to Broken Hill, NSW. The 'Big Bench' is 2.5 times the scale or a regular bench is located on the top of the Line of Lode, which is a high hill of mine deposits in the center of the city of Broken Hill.

Geraldton to Perth

Our last travelling day - Tuesday 24th August 2010

Horses with their blankets on, all cold and forlorn, birds with feathers ruffled to keep them warm.

Historic villages locked up tight, they haven't woken from the night.

Wind farms majestic on the hills, creating power to drive the mills.

Cars, trucks, vans hurrying north, 'tis cold in the south so they travel for the warmth.

Trees bending before the wind, it is man's creation and his will to win.

Cows scratching on a post. Ahh that feels so good to scratch 'that spot' on that post.

Sheep grazing on paddocks green and we keep passing trees on a lean. 

Stonestreets have so much to answer for giving us 'The Princess' in which to explore, riding through the countryside with airbags pumped high, enjoying the sights through the windows so large and so wide, we've been floating on air the past week or two, it's really a shame what we have to do.

To Derek our Captain so patient and skilled has been driving 'The Princess' over gullies and hills.

Narelle our hostess, (Derek's charming wife) rushing to and fro, always on the go, keeping us in line and on time wherever we go.

Our thanks to you both for this journey together, it has allowed us some memories to hold onto forever. 

Isla knitting so very quickly, Billy photographing industriously, Don and Maxine taking everything in, learning, interested, keeping young.

Ernie and Bettee, watching and listening, letting life go by, they have another coach tour and will continue on.

Ina, Betty and Shirley enjoying the drive, enjoying the country, the company and the smooth 'Princess' ride.

Jim is taking time for a well earned rest, keeping well abreast of events all about, enjoying the company on 'the Princess' this time.

Kathy and John are a mysterious pair, Kathy enjoying 'The Princess' ride, resting her back between keeping pace with our informative coach ride. John is so courteous and kind, he never leaves Kathy way behind.

Pattie and Jan are friends from way back, with appologies for any boo boo's we've made.

We have enjoyed ourselves tremendously on the smooth 'Princess' ride, meeting you all, enjoying your company, giving you cheek (because we can) keeping you on your toes.

Remembering Marlene who had to leave us from circumstances quite unforseen.

What more is to be said when it's time to go, except: Thanks to our driver and hostess for keeping us safe.

Thanks for your company one and all and on this sad/happy note, yes we have to catch the next flight out.

West Coast Tour

At the Top

Here at Stonestreet's Coaches we've just conducted a couple of tours to Cape York, but this isn't the only trip to the top that's taken place recently. While visiting Sydney Paul took a group for a behind the scenes tour of the Olympic Stadium (ANZ Stadium formerly Telstra Stadium) in Homebush. During their exploration of the sporting facility they also went to the top!

 

Trek to Texas

It was a lovely day for a drive in the country, with the sun shining as brightly as the golden wattle dotting the paddocks along the road. We stopped for morning tea at Coolmunda Dam near Inglewood before heading further south to the town of Texas.

Perched on the hill above the Dumaresq River the community of Texas is currently undergoing a street revitalisation. We relaxed with a picnic lunch in an intriguing playground outfitted with a flying fox and slippery dip - such a cosmopolitan structure for this wee country town.

Afterwards we were escorted on a tour of the town by Sally Ridgway, who told us about the history of Texas and it's connection to the state of Texas in America. We took in the views from Beacon Lookout before stopping into the Riverside Complex - a museum preserving the heritage of the former Riverside Freezing Works and Rabbit Factory.The building also houses the Wilson Collection, an interesting collection that began when the Wilson's rescued bits and pieces on trips to the local dump to educate their children about times past.

There was time for a stroll around 'downtown', browsing in shops and having a chat with some of the locals. Then it was on the road, where we back tracked to Inglewood and headed to Millmerran, before turning towards home once again.

All the Way to the Top!

We've been all the way to the most northern point in the Australia continent and we even have the pictures to prove it! Two groups have gone on an adventure with us to the very top of Australia. If you missed out don't despair as we'll be heading to Cape York again in May and June 2011.

 

 

Cane Fields & Prawn Farms

When you think of the Gold Coast, you may picture highrise buildings and white sand beaches. On a recent mystery trip we saw another side of the region. With local resident James as our tour guide we travelled the roads through the farmland of Alberton crossing the Logan River into the area once known as Pimpama Island.

This area, between the Pimpama River and the Logan River, includes Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point and Woongoolba. 'The Island' earned it's name during the late 1800's and early 1900's when along with the river boundaries, the swamps and lagoons filled during wet seasons, cutting off access.

James told us the history of the area and the first settlers. Our first stop was at a modest farm stand, whose wares included pumpkins, tomatoes, bananas and superbly sweet strawberries. With the sky threatening rain overhead we next visited Rocky Point, on the edge of Moreton Bay, for morning tea. It was a bit breezy but a pleasant place to enjoy a cuppa.

Back onboard we drove deep into sugar country, where the fields of sugar cane stretched for miles. In the distance you could see Rocky Point Sugar Mill, the second largest in Queensland. Although we didn't see any harvesting taking place, as there was still evidence of recent rain upon the ground, we learned much about the growing of the crop and the historical importance of the industry. Other produce of the area at differing times included oysters, arrowroot, bananas, vegetables and dairy.

Our next visit would be to a very different type of farm, Gold Coast Marine Aquaculture, where they grow prawns. Located beside the Logan River, the 50 hectare facility has two hatcheries, over 50 ponds and a processing plant. Unfortunately we couldn't go in the hatchery but James did bring out some broodstock to show us. We discovered plenty about the operation of a prawn farm even though it was between the harvesting (January to May) and stocking (September to early October). Before leaving we purchased some frozen Tiger Prawns.

 Having spent the morning discussing all manner of produce it was time for some sustenance. We dined at the Tavern in the fishing haven of Jacob's Well, where the food was delicious and the service quick and friendly.

Afterwards we drove through some of the neighbouring areas, including Calypso Bay - more typical 'Gold Coast' with it's new housing and marina development. The rural vistas we'd taken in today provided a very different view of the Gold Coast.

Christmas in July at Ballandean

'Twas five months before Christmas, near the end of July
We went on a tour, watching the landscape whisk by.
The garland was strung overhead with great care
Giving the inside of the coach, a most festive air.

With Ian in Santa tie, Hennie in her red vest
They handed out gifts to each and every guest.
The passengers nestled all snug in their seats
Wondered whether it was too early to eat sweets.

 

A trip away, with plenty of laughs and chatter,
The coach rolled along, there was nothing the matter.
Hennie had a game to play, with prizes to   be won,
The holiday themed quiz, was challenging but fun.

Next it was time for morning tea, at Leslie Dam
But today we wouldn’t be having scones and jam
Instead the table was laden with festive treats,
Fruit cake, rum balls and other delicious sweets. 

Time flew like a flash as we enjoyed our hot drink
Having a chat, then back on the bus in a wink.
Before we knew it we arrived at Ballandean
Where dormant vineyard was brown, not green.



A quick tour of the winery we had
Then inside for wine tasting, not bad.
White or red, sweet or dry, the server cried out
The classes clinked, during this wee drinking bout.

To tables clothed in red, candles flickering away
For a three course Christmas feast, not a buffet.
The crystal glittered as the fireplace roared
Crackers snapped, people laughed, more wine was poured.



The first course arrived fast, a buttery mushroom soup,
Then roast turkey and veg, no hungry mouths in this group.
Along came the dessert, plum pudding with custard
Today we dined well, no time to become flustered.

With appetites appeased we boarded our bus
Wine bottles tucked away, plenty to discuss
Rain started to fall, too warm for snowflakes today
It didn’t really matter, it was great to get away.

Heading home we were, when Ian had a thought
So close to the Bramble Patch, maybe we ought
‘Who would like ice cream?’, he did inquire
Now Ian’s a man you just have to admire!

So we went up into the hills above Glen Aplin
Oh surely having more eats wasn’t a deadly sin
Certainly not during a Christmas in July celebration
For it just isn’t the day for resisting temptation.


 

  

Darling Buds of Mal

Mal's not quite the next Brian Sams but he did take great care of the members of the Gladstone Orchids & Foliage Society(and all their plants!) on a recent charter tour organised by Irene Dowling.

For just a moment Mal, 'not being able to see the forest for the trees' (or was that the bus he couldn't see for the plants), must have thought 'What the bloomin'... But he 'didn't let the grass grow under his feet' and got right to the task at hand and managed to fit all the delicate cargo in. Not wanting his 'name to be mud' he was very conscientious with all the flora to avoid a 'whoops a daisy' on the way. And we're not 'gilding the lily' when we say everyone had a great time and loved Mal.

A Cool Mystery Tour

Our first stop of the day was for morning tea on the shores of Lake Coolmunda. By this time it was evident that our destination was Inglewood or some other town on the Southwestern Downs. But things aren’t always as they appear.

Back on board we didn’t return to the hwy but instead headed south on a narrow backroad through the scrub. The road known as  the ‘Tobacco Trail’ is a reminder that the crop was once cultivated here. 

Turning onto Shearer’s Way, we toured along towards the heart of Granite Belt country and the coldest place in Queensland—Stanthorpe. Rolling hills with golden winter grass, dotted with cypress, eucalyptus and grazing sheep passed by. Some emus were spotted disappearing behind trees. Large boulders began to appear in the landscape as we drove closer to Stanthorpe.

Arriving in town we stopped by the Stanthorpe Heritage Museum, where we learned about the districts unique past—from tin mining to fruit growing. The complex houses an incredibly diverse assortment including war memorabilia, textiles, a mineral collection and early Stanthorpe merchandising items.

Among the interesting buildings are the Ballandean Station Shepherd’s Hut and Willson’s Downfall Gaol. Displays scattered throughout the museum of unique ‘make-do’ items provided a fascinating look into the resourcefulness of the early pioneers. 

Being ‘Brass Monkey Season’ the air was a bit nippy but we were assured by the locals that it hadn’t really gotten cold yet. We had an hour to explore the museum. There was so much to look at that the time flew by quickly and before long we were all back aboard our cosy bus.

Leaving Stanthorpe behind we travelled the memorial route along  Armistice Way. The area had once been a part of the soldier settlement scheme after WWI. The place names chosen were a reminder of the battles the soldiers had served in during the war.

Giardino Cafe on Bapaume Road in Amiens was to be our lunch stop. Here we were met by the warmth of a log fire and served a generous lunch of delicious Barramundi and chicken cutlets, with a crunchy fresh salad and crispy chips. Some made the most of the meal, enjoying it with a glass of Granite Belt wine. After this relaxing repast it was time to stretch our legs on the short stroll to our awaiting coach.

It had been a lovely day and with the winter sunshine disappearing behind gray clouds we toured along towards Thulimbah enjoying the sights of the fruit orchards. The next stop was  the Granite Belt Dairy where we were treated to a tasting of farmhouse cheeses. There were also some chutneys and sauces to try. Afterwards we had one more yummy stop for the day—Sutton’s Farm where we enjoyed sampling their tasty apple juices.

It had been a fabulous day and everyone was content to settle into their seats and relax for the drive home.  It wasn’t only the fresh climate of the Stanthorpe region that made this a cool mystery, nor the great mixture of scenery, history and gourmet fare.

Back at Lake Coolmunda so many of us were certain we were on our way to Inglewood, Goondiwindi or Texas, never imagining we were actually heading to the Granite Belt. Mystery trips are always cool because of the surprise!

A Full-Filling Mystery

Occupied with the views, none of the passengers seemed too concerned where we were heading on our mystery tour, as we travelled down the range and through the countryside of the Lockyer Valley.

Our first stop of the day was in the pretty town of Esk where we enjoyed a delicious morning tea in the park. We continued our travels along the Brisbane Valley Highway passing Toogoolawah and Harlin before reaching the D’Aguilar Highway where we turned east towards Kilcoy. Just before Woodford we left the highway and took the scenic drive to Beerwah. Time rolled along as we toured through the hills and lush rainforests of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Tummys were starting to rumble when we arrived at our next destination, McMartin's Strawberry Farm outside of Bli Bli. Here we were provided with an exceptionally good BBQ lunch topped off with a scrumptious desert of fresh strawberries and cream. Even after such great fare many could not resist a homemade ice cream from the farm stall.

With appetites satiated we were back onboard and heading towards our next stop. It wasn't long before we were all being enticed by the magnificent array of handmade chocolates and truffles on offer at Cocoa Chocolat in Eumundi. Chocolatiere Louisa Raven gave us an interesting talk on the history of chocolate making which included an opportunity to taste the raw cacao nibs and some chocolate covered coffee beans and other goodies. The shop also provided a viewing window into the chocolate factory... although it was hard to take your eyes away from the exquisite delicacies in the display case.

After decisions on what yummy treats to indulge in, there was just enough time for a quick glance around the main street before boarding the coach for our return journey to Toowoomba. It had been a full (and very filling) day.

Mum's Day at the Marriott

We wanted Mother's Day to be extra special for all the mum's and their loved ones who joined the Stonestreet's Mother's Day trip. It needed to be a real treat so we chose a visit to the Brisbane Marriot for High Tea.

You Never Know...

Who you'll meet when you're travelling about Australia!

Just yesterday Rob was touring around the Northern Territory with a charter group when he crossed paths with another Stonestreet's coach. On board the bus full of travellers were also Derek and Narelle.
 

Everyone is enjoying the sights. Rob reported that Uluru is still in the same spot as last visit... but the recent rains have transformed the normally barren landscape into a sea of lush green grass.

Excursion to Warwick

 Mystery Day Trip - 29 April 2010

With blue skies and sunshine overhead, we were off on another mystery tour. We travelled south along the New England Hwy stopping at a park on the edge of Warwick for morning tea.

Warwick is known as the Rose & Rodeo Capital of Australia, but today we were here to explore it's pioneering past. The park was a good starting point with the large shears topping the memorial to the legendary shearer Jackie Howe. 

After enjoying a cuppa, with some delicious macaroons and fresh fruit we headed into Warwick, arriving at our next stop Pringle Cottage. (In case you're wondering... Derek and Narelle said they're not related.)

Pringle Cottage is a lovely two-story sandstone house built c1870. Once used as a private school the building is now part of a complex operated as a museum by the Warwick & District Historical Society. Other buildings in the complex include a shepherd's slab hut, Old Canning Cottage and Eastwell Hall.  The displays feature a fascinating collection of household items, furnishings, tools, equipment and other artifacts from the past.

After perusing the antiquities and memorabilia we reboarded our coach, joined by a guide from the historical society. We spent the next hour travelling the streets Warwick, listening to the stories behind the many splendid sandstone buildings and the charming timber dwellings.

Next it was to the RSL where we consumed an appetizing meal and relaxed once again with a cuppa. There was even a bit of time to spare for a pleasant stroll or a flutter on the pokies.

Back on the bus we headed to our final venue for the day, the Warwick Railway Precinct. Besides the C17 Steam Locomotive No. 971 and numerous carriages the  precinct contains the old Cottonvale Station Buildings, a locomotive roundhouse, a locomotive turntable, and a water tank c1887. Here we were given a guided tour, learning about the Southern Downs Steam Railway and the work they're doing to preserve our rail heritage.

More Trip Photos

Heading back to Toowoomba we took the Sunflower Route through Allora. Although there were plenty of paddocks rusty red with sorghum the  sunflowers had only recently been harvested but it was still an enjoyable drive.

What a Small World It Is

Just the other day someone asked if Flat Stanley was still around.

Unfortunately his vacation has come to an end and he's on his way home to Canada and Ms Mooney's Grade 3 Social Studies Class at Meadowview Public School in Addison, Ontario.

Before he left he met up with someone he had a lot in common with! It turns out that young Master Stonestreet made a very similar fella last year, and that little guy known as Flat Tommy visited Canada.

It really is a small world.

Exploring the Port of Brisbane

Today (8 April) our journey would take us into Brisbane. With our professional coach captain negotiating the busy city traffic, we were able to sit back and enjoy the cityscape.


After a yummy morning tea alongside the Brisbane River we made our way beneath the river, travelling through the Clem7 Tunnel to Bowen Hills. From there we headed east to cross the river once again - This time on the topside via the Gateway Bridge. 


Arriving at the Port's visitors centre we discovered that there was much to see and do, even before embarking on the guided tour. We had a delicious lunch at the Eco Cafe, viewed a video highlighting the activities of the port and had a stroll around the gardens while enjoying a bit of birdwatching on the lake. Some even had a go at moving cargo from ship to shore, operating a tug boat or driving a fork lift while playing the challenging interactive games located in the displays.


Back on the coach, our sightseeing tour got us up close to the terminals and the massive ships giving us an insight into the various operations of the port. We watched as cars were driven off an immense car carrier, wondering how they ever managed to keep track of where the vehicles ended up parked. We were impressed by the efficiency of the modern coal terminal and the gantry cranes used to move containers. We marvelled at the amazing workings of the automated container straddles at the Patrick berths. We saw a mountain of woodchips ready for export which just might end up returning to Australia as paper. Our guide provided us with loads of interesting facts, answered all our questions and made sure he had us pondering about the journey all that stuff in our homes takes to get there.


The Port of Brisbane might not be your typical tourist attraction but a trip into Brisbane for a tour of the port made for a fascinating day out.

A Magical Mary Valley Rattler Trip

The whistle blows and with a huge whoosh of steam the train begins to move forward on its 40km journey from Gympie to Imbil. Riding onboard a steam train transports you, not just from one station to another, but back in time.

The locomotive chuffs its way along the track, as views of the Mary Valley slide past. Perched upon leather seats in glorious old wooden carriages listening to the steady clackety-clack of the wheels as the aroma of burning coal drifts in the open windows, brings back pleasant memories.

Looking at the smiling faces of all the passengers one could only conclude that there's something magical about riding in a steam train! It's definitely a nostalgic adventure not to be missed.

4WD Condamine Gorge Trek

A fellow traveller summed up the day when they said they 'enjoyed it immensely but could not believe we could stay off the highway so much'. Touring the back roads in a 4wd bus is pure enjoyment.

Along the way most of the farmers waved as we drove past, although there were a few strange looks. They probably could not fathom why we were travelling on a rough track that apparently led to nowhere.

The countryside provided some beautiful views and once we were in the gorge it was truly magnificent. We stopped at Tivia Falls for photos. Our hostess Sylvia (like most everyone) could've been content just to stay up there 'if it weren’t for the mosquitoes'. We went through 14 river crossings which got deeper and deeper and rockier as we progressed through the gorge. With some local history about each one, we managed to keep everyone in one piece.



Lunch was at Queen Mary Falls. The sound of rushing water tempted the energetic to hike to the bottom of the ravine for a brilliant view from below the falls. Our next stop was Dagg Falls. A beautiful sight - seeing all that water in such abundance.



Continuing on, we travelled home through the country towns of Greenmount, Clifton  and the suburb Hodgsonvale via the back roads. An interesting route none of us had ever been along.

Stonie the Careflight Bear

Corinne Ross, Community Relation Manager at the Coolangatta Careflight Centre presented travel club member Glee Young with a pilot bear in recognition of Glee's support over the years.

The darling fella, nicknamed Stonie (short for Stonestreet's of course) is number 54 in Glee's collection of Careflight teddy bears. Glee "belted him up on the bus". After all... Having just toured the Careflight facilty she was very safety conscious.

Steam Train Day Trip

When you get out and about you never know what you'll see. On Steam Train Sunday the travel club took a ride through Brisbane on a historic steam train. It was definitely the highlight of the day but there was lots more to enjoy too.

The morning tea stop afforded a chance to take in a bit of nature on the outskirts of the city while a visit to Kangaroo Point provided a great view of Brisbane's cityscape.

40 Mile Beach Day Trip

It may look like any number of other beaches found around Australia but the coast that stretches between Noosa and Rainbow Beach is a designated road.

The 40 Mile Beach Road has posted speed limits but unlike other roads there are no white lines and the width of the road depends on the time of day.

With the surf of the Coral Sea on one side and the Great Sandy National Park on the other, it has to be one of the best coastal roads in Australia.

History & Mystery

Todays mystery tour consisted of a leisurely morning tea at Colleges Crossing on the banks of the Brisbane River, a drive through picturesque countryside lined with cane fields, a delicious lunch at Harrigan's Drift Inn in Calypso Bay and a sweet, cold and creamy treat - a Macca's ice cream cone.

It also included a visit to Old Beenleigh Town, a historical village of some twenty-two heritage buildings, old machinery & vehicles, antiques, photos and memorabilia of yesteryear. The collections displayed in the church, school, boot-makers shop, railway station, post office, jail, council chambers, and old cottages portrayed the story of the Beenleigh area from the time of settlement some 150 years ago.

Strolling around the grounds and through the various buildings one could almost imagine they'd stepped back in time. There was plenty to peruse and the sight of long forgotten implements that were once everyday items produced many enjoyable memories. The exceptional care taken with the displays and the addition of some whimsical details made this historical village a delight to visit.

Rainy Day Sights

Having consumed a hearty breakfast we were ready for a day of sightseeing in the Warrumbungles.  Overhead the clouds loomed heavily. Before long the rain streaked across the windows of the coach and the mountains disappeared behind the mist.

The rain would continue to pour on and off throughout the day making it necessary to change a few plans.  The precipitation never dampened the spirits of the travellers. Living in the world's driest continent Aussie's know rain is a blessing even when it makes an appearance during their holidays.

So our change in direction took us along a path where we encountered some very quick kangaroos, ducks swimming across the road and a few kilometre's of livestock "grazing in the long paddock".

When on tour through the Australian countryside you're sure to see splendid scenery but the wildlife can be elusive. Spying kangaroos bounding along the roadside elicited a few exclamations while the scattering of ducks who had confused the road for a stream was a real surprise.

Taking a different road then what had originally been planned was how we encountered a most memorable 'attraction' - horses and cattle as far as you could see! Horses galloped by as cows stood munching on green grass and lapping up water that had pooled on the bitumen. While most of the beasts plodded off the highway as our coach neared a few 'mad cows' seemed to contemplate taking on the bus.

The weather hid the mountains from us but the sights we did see (including all that glorious rain) made for an excellent day. And the mountains will still be there on another day.

February Mystery Tour Day Two

We'd been away travelling through the universe to "beyond the black stump" to a place that once rushed but is now history. And all in just one afternoon touring around the Warrumbungle shire!

We've Binnaway
Our scenic drive took us to the peaceful town of Binnaway located on the banks of the Castlereagh River. A bustling railway town during the 1920's, it was a vital transport link ferrying timber, grain and iron ore from rural New South Wales to the coast. In 1956 there was plenty of commotion when the town became the setting for scenes in a motion picture. Locals appeared as extras alongside Peter Finch in the film 'The Shiralee'. Binnaway is aboriginal for peppermint tree...which isn't quite as amusing to say.

Through the Universe
Following the road through the peaceful countryside we sped passed Uranus. This really wasn't a surprise for the travellers as we'd glided by Saturn earlier. We'd also spy Neptune before the day was over.

Beyond the Black Stump
Touring along we enjoyed vast views of fertile farmland and rolling pastures. Just before Coolah we caught sight of the Black Stump. The actual location of the black stump is debatable but the town of Coolah claims to be the home of the original "Black Stump". At least two other towns in regional Australia claim to be home to the  'black stump': Merriwagga and Gunbar in NSW, and Blackall in Queensland. The colloquial saying "beyond the black stump" refers to country that is remote and uncivilised.

On the other side of Coolah we came upon a sight that was much more astonishing then the replica black stump. A gigantic rock spewed from an ancient volcano! Although not found on any maps, its formidable appearance was awe-inspiring.

Gold Rush Town Steeped in History
From there we travelled to the historic gold mine town of Gulgong. Although the rush only lasted a few years back in the 1870's the town didn't disappear like most boom towns. Now a quaint village with a rich heritage it was a great place to spend a few hours digging deeper into the past.

As the town on the old ten dollar note Gulgong has preserved the history of the town with some 150 buildings of historic significance. The town contains many attractions including the Prince of Wales Opera House, the Henry Lawson Centre, a Pioneer Museum which covers two blocks and a swaggies trail along Mayne Street. For those who prefer living in the here and now... there was Stack's Discount Variety Down Under, an unbelieveably huge 'cheap shop' located beneath the Coles Supermarket.

Leaving Gulgong behind we travelled back to Coonabarabran taking in the landscape and sights of Dunedoo and Mendooran along the way.

It had been a tremendously full day of sightseeing. Our friend Stanley enjoyed his adventure seeing the countryside and learning about the history of the region.

Travelling Back in Time

On the morning of our mystery tour's second day the travellers took a trip back in time... way back! 

Having overnighted in Coonabarabran it was only a short jaunt to the Crystal Kingdom. Here we had a fascinating look at the area from it's origins some 250 million years ago, learning about the Garrawilla and Warrumbungle volcanos and the Great Jurassic Sea.

The museum displays crystals, minerals and fossils of the Warrumbungles, including some of the world's rarest Zeolite crystals.

Another quick drive brought us to the Coonabarabran Visitor Centre where we found the story of the megafauna Diprotodon, a giant marsupial that roamed Australia some two million years ago.

This particular skeleton of a huge wombat-like beast was found near Tambar Springs and is believed to bear marks of injuries, possibly inflicted by a spear. Having been carbon dated to around 35,000 years ago the creature would have co-existed with humans. 

The exhibit includes the skull and most of the skeleton, a large mural of a family of diprotodons, as well as information on the Bingara fossil site and marsupial carnivores.
