Then how about 1400km of isolated desert track that runs through the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia?
This 'highway' was surveyed and built under the direction of that legendary bushman Len Beadell. Len and his team, known as The Gunbarrel Road Construction Party, attempted wherever possible to make the road 'as straight as a gunbarrel'.
The initial surveying of the 'highway' was done by Len, pushing through the scrub in his Land Rover, his theodolite always within easy reach. During these surveying expeditions, there were times when Len nearly starved to death. The Land Rover broke down many times and suffered countless punctures and other mishaps, all in the searing heat of the desert. After this initial surveying was completed, a bulldozer would follow along and cut a raw level track. A road grader came along after that and finished the job. Highway making - the outback way.
The Gunbarrel Highway begins at 'Victory Downs' homestead, pushes westward to the Rawlinson Ranges, skirts south of the Gibson Desert, via the Warburton Mission, connecting to the existing road at Carnegie Station.
